Jaws (1975)

Pros
  • All star cast, especially Robert Shaw as the crazy captain (Not to mention that being one of the biggest Oscar snubs of all time)
  • Iconic opening scene (I'll never swim in the ocean at night)
  • Keeping the ‘villain’ hidden until the 3rd act builds suspense and lets our imagination do the work scaring us
  • One of the best theme songs of all time, if not the greatest of all time
  • Top of the line dialogue, endlessly quotable
  • There is something terrifying about having to play the sharks game, as in having to put humans in the water where the shark thrives and humans struggle
  • Spielberg really creates a sense of hopelessness in the middle of the ocean
  • Makes getting into the ocean......scary
  • "You're going to need a bigger boat" (Improvised line)
  • The movie created paranoia throughout the world solely from this movie
  • The bonding between the three men on the boat is tense, yet funny at times
  • The beach scenes are terrifying in the sense that no one even notices a shark attack, that is the brilliance of the movie, a silent killer
  • Multiple stand out scenes causing pure nervousness and anxiety
  • The USS Indianapolis story (one of my favorite monologues of all time)
  • Who in their right mind would be willing go into the water in a cage with that giant shark? Definitely will make you think twice about getting in one of those things
  • The thrill of the hunt, chasing the shark in his environment
  • The first movie to coin the term 'blockbuster', seeing as it was the highest grossing movie of all time at the time of its release (Star Wars, unfortunately, beats it two years later)
  • One of the best horror movies of all time, and one of my person favorite movies

Cons
  • Some scenes (mostly involving some action sequences) have terrible voicing/dubbing
  • Continuity errors with the amount of barrels on the boat are always changing during scenes

Score: 10/10

One of the greatest movies of all time, Steven Spielberg has created another masterpiece with his terrifying ocean thriller, Jaws. Scary and tense throughout the entire movie, this is how a true horror movie should be. The movie builds up its villain perfectly without throwing all of its cards on the table too early, which then makes the reveal so much more harrowing and intense.

Spielberg takes a great, if not potentially real, storyline and spins it in a way that makes his characters shine just as much as the shark itself. The characters are strong & memorable, and add excitement to each scene as we watch them bond together while hunting the maneater. Jaws is so effective that it actually has sparked real life fear in the hearts of millions who are now overly cautious about going into the open water. You know when a movie has the ability to strike actual fear into people's lives, that the movie itself is something special, Jaws is no different. Jaws is one of the greatest movies of all time, from it's fantastic acting to a terrifying theme song, this is a movie for the ages!
