The Loved Ones (2009)

  • Another hidden gem within the horror genre! One of the best horror movies of the 21st century
  • Cinematography is spectacular, again it is something that you pick up on almost immediately
  • Takes less than 15 minutes before things take a turn for the worst and the excitement kicks in
  • Great acting by the two leads, one a complete psychopath, and the other an emo hero fighting for his life
  • A truly frightening villain, one of the best to come out of the decade
  • "I'm ready to draw on him now......"
  • Very, very imaginative torture techniques
  • Bizarre twists, there are a lot of them and they come quickly
  • Simple yet effective story-line executed wonderfully and shot beautifully
  • Plenty of black humor, if a horror movie can pull off humor and remain tense and scary, I'm all for it
  • 'Funny' (in a sense) seeing his friend having the time of his life while the protagonist having the worst time of his life
  • Perhaps one of the best teen horror movies since Wes Craven's Scream
  • Overall The Loved Ones is very effective at creating a super awkward and tense atmosphere

  • How did his razor get in those pants? Didn't they dress him?
  • Some of the searching moments from the mom and girlfriend take you out of the moment
  • The last 8 minutes kind of a let down compared to earlier moments could have had a stronger final punch to the gut

Score: 8/10

Containing a genuinely creepy villain, The Loved Ones is one of the better 'torture porn' films out there. Now I know what you are thinking, 'not another torture porn, none of those are good', however, The Loved Ones is one of the few exceptions worthy of mentioning. This movie features a nice blend of style (probably the high point) and plenty of bizarre moments, that when all is said and done, the movie comes together as a very exciting horror movie.

The overall story might be a bit unoriginal, but the sheer amount of twists the movie features, makes the movie more original than it should be. Things only go from bad to worse for the main character, but it's exciting to watch those moments unfold, in a dark and twisted sort of way. The movie basically splits the narrative between the main character who is getting tortured and punished, and his friend who is having the best night of his life. There is definitely humor in the movie, obviously the majority of it comes from the latter of the two characters just mention, and it is without question pitch black humor.

All and all, The Loved Ones is a dark comedy at heart, that also happens to feature one of the most diabolical female villains of the modern era. The Loved Ones is easily one of the best horror movies of the past 25 years, which is a very bold statement, but the sheer style alone makes the movie worthy of viewing!
