Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

  • Andy Serkis as Caesar is great, phenomenal performance
  • The director truly captures the physical toughness the apes possess....they can be very scary
  • Humans are put on the back burner for once (take notes Michael Bay)
  • The Motion Capture is truly incredible
  • Koba is terrifying to say the least
  • What the movies does perfectly is display the life of the apes with phenomenal emotional impact
  • Definitely one of the smarter summer blockbusters
  • Some really sad moments coming from the apes perspective!
  • The stand out point being, could humans truly defend against intelligent, physically superior apes?

  • The build up scenes before the war breaks out are a tad slow, especially since we know what is coming
  • Cliche internal uprising leading to monstrous consequences...
  • 3rd act seems a bit rushed/forced
  • Never captures a strong sense of suspense, probably because we all know where the movie is going towards
  • Just about zero comedy
  • One of the humans (you'll know who I am referring to) is completely idiotic, why would they bring him back to the apes camp?
  • There is no way that nuclear plant would work after 10 plus years of not working

Score: 7/10

Slightly let down having read plenty of film critics praise the movie, but 'Apes' is without a doubt one of the better blockbusters of the year. Is this movie better than the first, it depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for action, Dawn is hands down the winner, but if you want a more unique and fresh storyline, Rise is the better choice.

  1. It's interesting to hear what you think of the movie. I am not sure if I want to see it in the theaters or not.

    1. I was expecting a whole lot more based on the critics, but was let down. I really liked the first one alot, but this somehow felt familiar, didnt have any twists or tension really. I without a doubt prefer 'Edge of Tomorrow' and 'Days of Future Past' as the better blockbusters! The great aspect is its from the apes perspective, but the storyline I didnt find all that interesting. Its a tough call really!
