Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)

Pros
  • Everything you heard is true, this movie rocks, it's fun, exciting, and hilarious
  • Drax The Destroyer's deadpan humor is hilarious, as well as the fact that he does not understand metaphors
  • Rocket has some great dialogue
  • The alien design of just about anyone in the movie looks fantastic
  • Great to see Thanos have some actual screen time, but....
  • "I am Groot"
  • The movie is packed full of hilarious dialogue and one-liners
  • Some solid 1980's nostalgia
  • The only real emotion comes from Groot and Racoon (Star Lord and Gamora didn't develop too well)
  • The soundtrack is pretty dang good (not as great as I wanted it to be though)
  • What sets this movie apart from previous Marvel movies is that it wastes hardly zero time explaining backstories
  • The graphics, of course, are outstanding and colorful, I loved the vibrant purples
  • Groot's powers are quite unique and exciting to see them be used
  • Together with Racoon's fast talking banter and Groot's powerfulness, they make one of the better duos in recent memory
  • Some very interesting future technology gadgetry
  • Almost every scene within the prison is hilarious, especially the sleeping quarters scene
  • The best thing about the movie is that Guardians is very rewatchable

Cons
  • At the beginning of the film they are forced to throw a lot of information in our faces and it is hard to remember certain names, planets, allies, and enemies
  • Why would an Infinity Gem just be sitting on some planet, with hardly any security? Why hadn't someone stolen it yet?
  • Ronan The Accuser is sadly another throwaway villain (though I did like his design and makeup)
  • They downplay Drax The Destroyer's true power, he is basically a bulked up wimp in the movie, which certainly is not true about him
  • Seemed extremely easy to convince the group of outlaws to take on Ronan
  • Glenn Howerton (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia) auditioned for the role of Star Lord....he clearly didn't get the part
  • The biggest disappoint had to be Josh Brolin's voicing of Thanos, it is not nearly as daunting/intimidating as his voice should be (hopefully they make a few changes in coming years)
  • The end credits scene is a huge letdown to say the least

Score: 9/10

Guardians of the Galaxy is hands down the best movie that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has given thus far and one of the best movies of 2014. Most of the excitement in the marvel movies takes place in the action scenes, not with Guardians, the best scenes are simply the character interactions and dialogue between them. Each character features their own type of humor in a sense and watching them mesh together and banter between themselves is great. But on the downside of things, the storyline is pretty generic, a bunch of random heroes must band together to fight a powerful, but not too powerful foe. Guardians plays by the normal rules, love between the group, disbandment, sacrifice, everything we have seen before is present here, but there is so much charm between the characters that it's so easy to overlook those faults. Not being a huge Marvel fan (so far the only good movies being Iron Man and The Avengers), it is safe to say this is the best of the lot, mostly because it doesn't feel like its part of the MCU at all.

    1. From what I think I know about you (haha), I'm sure you'll absolutely love it! I thought it was hilarious, specifically Racoon and Drax! Drax's deadpan delivery is pure gold

  2. Agree that Ronan was dull (I was hoping for a Loki type villain in a film like this) but loved pretty much everything else. Groot dancing at he end in his pot was genius. Please save us from a potential Howard movie! Nice blog!

    1. Yeah im really surprised they didn't give Ronan a bit more personality like you said a la Loki. Groot growing back was precious! I really hope that Howard The Duck thing was just a nod at comic book fans and doesn't develop into anything. I'm not a huge comic book fan so I was hoping for something the lead into The Avengers 2 or something. Still a great movie though, thank you!

  3. Overall, I loved the movie! So much fun, yet it had such lovable characters and excellent humor.

The Howard the Duck cameo at the end will probably mean nothing in the grand scheme of things, except for maybe another cameo in the next film.

    1. I'm glad you liked it, I knew you would ha. The humor has just perfect, each character had a special type of humor and it was great. Definitely my favorite of the MCU! Yeah I think the Howard the Duck was for hardcore fans only. Once that scene ended in my theater, a bunch of people around me were not too happy, said things like 'Really?? Waited this long for that?", "That was disappointing", "I wanted Avengers 2 stuff". I wasn't too happy either, those peoples reactions were pretty funny though!

  4. The gadgetry and fight scenes are nicely rendered. The aeronautical battles, though, fall well short of state-of-the-art. Maybe they're collateral damage to the film's goofy style.
